What is Endocrine Surgery?
Endocrine surgery involves the removal of diseased glands from your body. Diseased glands can cause an imbalance of hormones, become overgrown or harbor cancer.
Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate many vital functions in your body, such as metabolism, growth, reproduction, and stress response.
Some of the glands that may require endocrine surgery are:
-
Thyroid gland
This gland is located in your neck and produces thyroid hormone, which affects your energy level and metabolism.
-
Parathyroid glands
These are four small glands near your thyroid that produce parathyroid hormone, which regulates your calcium metabolism.
-
Adrenal glands
These are two glands above your kidneys that produce several hormones, including adrenaline, cortisol, aldosterone, and sex hormones
